What is Phenolic Insulation?
Phenolic insulation is a rigid, closed-cell insulation material widely used in construction applications, including ductwork, walls, roofing, and flooring. Thanks to its structure and excellent thermal performance, it is considered one of the most thermally efficient insulation types available. Standard phenolic insulation boards typically offer R-values ranging from R-6 to R-24 per sheet. For greater thermal resistance, two boards can be combined to achieve R-values between R-30 and R-45, depending on their thickness.
How Phenolic Insulation Is Made
Phenolic insulation is produced using a wet foam mixture that is first applied to the bottom layer of facing material. The foam then expands upward to bond with the top layer. This assembly is cooked under pressure and subsequently cured in a secondary oven. Once fully cured, the phenolic insulation boards are cut to the required dimensions and packaged for distribution.
Benefits of Phenolic Insulation
Excellent Moisture Resistance – With a closed-cell content often exceeding 90%, phenolic insulation resists moisture penetration, helping prevent mold growth and R-value loss. In contrast, mineral fiber insulation can absorb moisture and lose much of its thermal performance.
Superior Thermal Performance – Phenolic insulation has significantly lower thermal conductivity than materials like EPS, XPS, PIR, or mineral fiber, allowing it to achieve the same thermal performance with a thinner profile. It typically delivers thermal conductivity values of around 0.018 W/m·K across various thicknesses.
Outstanding Fire Safety – This thermoset material hardens and chars when exposed to fire, producing minimal smoke compared to thermoplastics such as polystyrene, which melt, soften, and emit thick black smoke. Many phenolic insulation products meet UL 723 flame spread and/or UL 181 standards.
Environmentally Friendly – Phenolic closed-cell insulation is free from CFCs and HCFCs, with many products offering zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP).
Fiber-Free Design – Being fiber-free, phenolic insulation minimizes the risk of loose fibers entering the airstream through ductwork, ensuring cleaner air distribution.
